Year One Meadowside

Nurturing curiosity, courage and kindness

Learning for Wednesday 1st April

Good morning!

Here is your learning for today:

Early Bird Phonics:

Sentence Writing

Maths:

Today you will be adding numbers together using a number line. (Just focus on addition, subtraction is tomorrow!)

Here is my example:

There are two options:

Option 1 – If you have a printer, print out this worksheet: (Numbers to 30 is a challenge!)

T-N-3016-Addition-to-20-with-a-Number-Line-Activity-Sheet_ver_2

T-N-3020-Addition-to-30-with-a-Number-Line-Activity-Sheet

Here are some number lines to print out if you’d like.

Numberline to 30 t-n-2440-numbers-0-to-20-number-line-_ver_1

Option 2 – If you don’t have a printer, make your own number line. You could put it in a plastic wallet and write on it with a whiteboard pen if you have one.

Phonics:

  • Recap Phase 3 and 5 sounds.
  • Tricky word trucks on Phonics Play.
  • Complete one of your Phonics mats in your pack.

Here is one of the Phonics mats just in case:

t-l-526449-phonics-activity-mat-1-resource-pack-english-english_ver_1

English:
Thank you for sending me your amazing stories!

Today you will be correcting my sentences – I think I have made some silly mistakes! Write them out correctly in your books. Remember to check capital letters and punctuation.

Here is our poster from our English working wall to help you:

Miss Jenkins’ silly sentences:

My silly sentences PDF

Here are the other activities I suggested yesterday if you wanted to do them in an afternoon!

  • In our Big Idea, we learned all about the world. We could name and locate the seven continents and also the four countries and capital cities of the UK. This week in school we would have been making weather forecast presentations.

Can you:

  • Watch a weather forecast.
  • Draw or print a map of the UK. Can you label it?
  • Pretend you are a weather forecaster and do a presentation using your map! Use all of your knowledge of countries and capital cities. You could even make weather symbols to stick on.
  • Please record these and either post on Facebook, message or email me them! I would love to see 🙂

  • We also learned about UK landmarks. Choose one and make it! You could use lego, junk modelling, sketching, painting, string art, bake it, use natural materials from your garden, draw it in the style of a particular artist – the more creative the better! Please post or send me your finished product!
  • Complete an activity in your Busy Book – can you complete all of these by the end of the Easter holidays?
  • Make a time capsule to remember what could be one of the biggest moments in our lifetime. You could write a letter about what is happening, write diary entries, write about what it is like learning at home, print or use a cutting of a newspaper (only if you have one), a drawing and some photos of the things you have been doing. You could include anything you like!
  • Joe Wicks workout every day at 9am.
  • Please remember to read each day. If you have a limited selection of books, please create an account on Oxford Owl. They have lots of amazing books that your child can read independently. (It also means you all get twenty minutes of quiet time..!)

Learning for Tuesday 31st March

Good morning Year 1!

Here is the plan for today:

Early Bird Phonics:

Buried Treasure

Maths:
Yesterday you looked at addition using objects. Today you will do the same activity but with subtraction.

Remember – when we are subtracting we ALWAYS start with the largest number. Use objects from around the house to help you.

Again, write the questions out in your Maths book. Challenge yourself with bigger numbers!

Phonics:

  • Recap using Phase 3 and 5 flashcards, my videos or this Powerpoint:

Phase 5 Sound Powerpoint

  • Writing words to match the pictures:

Phonics

  • Challenge – Can you write three of the words in sentences?

English:

Finish writing your amazing story from yesterday!

Remember:

Here are some other activities you could do throughout the week. These are optional but some nice ideas now the sun is hiding!

Learning for Monday 30th March

Good morning!

I hope you had a great weekend and hope you managed to relax.

Here is the suggested timetable. Please don’t stress or worry about getting all of the work done. The most important thing to us is that you and you child are happy and not feeling anxious! We understand it’s also tricky when you have more than one child! Whatever work you get done is amazing. Please just ask if you’re struggling or need advice, however big or small!

I will be giving you each a call once a week to check everything is ok and you are happy with everything. I look forward to catching up with you all!

Early Bird Phonics:

Scribble Spelling

Maths: Addition and Subtraction

Use objects to work out the following questions. You could use pasta, stones from the garden, small toys, anything you can find!

REMEMBER! When adding, we always start with the biggest number and count on.

Write the questions out in your Maths book when you have worked it out. You could even challenge yourself and make up your own addition questions.

Year 1 Maths Monday

Phonics:

  • Recap Phase 3 and 5 flashcards (either on Phonics Play or my videos!)
  • Read the real words on the balloons and the nonsense words on the aliens.

Can you draw your own alien and give it a funny name?

English: Little Red Riding Hood

On Friday you drew a story map for Little Red Riding Hood. Today you will start to write your story using your map to help you. You have tomorrow to do this too so don’t rush it! Make sure your writing is as beautiful as always!

Remember:

Have a fab afternoon,

Miss Jenkins x

Learning for Friday 27th March

Happy Friday!

You have made it to the end of your first week parents! I hope you have enjoyed the extra time as a family and that it hasn’t been too stressful!

Early Bird Phonics:

Choose one of my spelling strategies and practise these spellings:

said      have      like      some      little      what

My spelling strategies

Maths:

First of all, let’s check if your estimations were correct! It took 23 egg cups to fill the plant pot!

Now, Miss Jenkins is REALLY thirsty! Which glass should she use? I want you to explain why, and why the other two glasses wouldn’t be the best option.

‘I think… because…’

Phonics:

  • Phonics Play – Time Trial flashcards
  • Tricky word trucks
  • Picnic on Pluto (choose a sound you find tricky).
  • Can you make up five of your own alien words?

English: Little Red Riding Hood

Now that you know the story really well, I would like you to make a story map. Here are some different examples:

Make sure it just has drawings on it, we will be writing the story next week!

Story board template

Have a fab weekend and a well-earned rest! You have all done an amazing job this week – I am so proud of you all! (Parents – that includes you too!)

Message for parents

Good morning! Just to let you know that I’m not feeling 100% and will be staying in bed for the next week. I will still be putting things on the blog each day and continuing to work from home so still feel free to message or email if you have any questions. Please bear with me as I might not be able to reply straight away. Keep me updated – I would still love to see what the children have been up to!  Stay safe, Miss Jenkins x

Learning for Thursday 26th March

Good morning!

I hope you’re finding the Facebook group useful – thanks to those parents who have shared useful suggestions!

Here is the plan for today:

Early Bird Phonics:

(The children will explain what Rainbow writing is!)

Maths: Volume and capacity

For this activity you might want to make a water tray outside or take your washing up bowl into the garden and fill it with water!

  • Collect three different sized containers.
  • Let’s estimate (making a really good guess!) Which one do you think will hold the most water? Which one do you think will hold the least amount of water? Can you put the containers in size order?
  • Can you fill them so that they are full, half full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty?
  • Challenge! I want you to find out how many little egg cups of water it will take me to fill up the plant pot! Estimate! I will let you know the answer tomorrow and you can check if you were right 🙂 Have a go at this yourself with different containers.

Phonics:

  • Flashcards with Miss Jenkins https://youtu.be/Mal8PjdljSE
  • Tricky words with Miss Jenkins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4U7EEx4VSo&t=4s
  • Writing down words to match the pictures. Draw your sound buttons on!
  • Can you write the words in a sentence?

English: Little Red Riding Hood

Here is the Powerpoint of the story you used yesterday.

LRRH story powerpoint

  • Retell the story! There are lots of different ways you could do this. I have attached a link below for a play script which you could learn with your family. You could record it and send me it – I would love to see! There are also some puppets so you could create your own puppet show.

Little Red Riding Hood Playscript

Puppets

Puppets to colour in

Or even better – you could make your own puppets! Tape them onto wooden spoons 🙂

Thank you so much for all the lovely photos and videos! I love to see what you are all up to!

Miss Jenkins x

P.S. If any of you have any ideas or suggestions for videos then please let me know, I’m more than happy to make them if you will find them useful!

Phonics videos

I have recorded a few videos on Phonics (see, you can’t get rid of me that easily!)

I have done one video with me introducing Phonics and going through the flashcards and the actions.

The second video is still of me showing the Phase 3 and 5 flashcards, but it means you can play the video and your child can say the sounds independently. Basically without all the wittering in the first video!

This video is all about reading Phase 5 tricky words:

I hope these are helpful. Please let me know if you would like anything else.
